Advancing Justice in the Climate Fight

The AABE National Conference, hosted by the American Association of Blacks in Energy, took place from May 1st to May 5th, 2023. The conference provided an opportunity for energy professionals, executives, attorneys, entrepreneurs, policy professionals, engineers, and students to enhance their understanding of the energy industry. There, Dream.Org representatives Alana Lewis and T.J. Osborne were able to share the work that we're doing to advocate for a fair and just transition to clean energy. T.J. Osborne spoke on a panel called "Just Energy Transition," where he highlighted the Green For All Business Council, the Justice40 strategy, and the organization's efforts to allocate 15% of climate investments to minority-owned businesses.

The newest tool for ensuring the government holds true to its Justice40 climate justice promise was just released. The Environmental Justice Scorecard, a tool used by 24 federal agencies to measure progress towards the Justice40 Initiative, aims to hold the government accountable and ensure transparency in addressing climate change impacts on disadvantaged communities. It sets a standard for identifying criteria that make a community disadvantaged. The newest scorecard, released in April, quantifies the government's efforts and establishes a transparent framework for helping disadvantaged communities. It works in tandem with the Climate and Environmental Justice Screening Tool (CEJST) to identify communities in need of support. Green For All's advocacy played a role in shaping the scorecard's criteria, and future versions will focus on community engagement and supporting minority-owned businesses.
